Tiki Carving Pointers

I just got started to get involved in Tiki carving (kinda). I'm wanting to know what is the easiest way to get started, ie. tools, woods... I've been collecting trunks from the side of roads that look like tiki carving material possibly. I have some pine, small oak, and Palm tree trunks I just picked up from a neighbors yard that was just cut down by a local tree surgeon co. The palm trunks looks like ideal for carving tikis, three feet tall (7 of them) and about 10 to 12 inches thick. Also, does the outer bark need to be taken off first to carve better or is that a matter of preference?

everything you ever wanted to know about tiki carving is in the creating thread. good luck!
