Over my extended holiday vacation, I decided to paint my Goof mug. There was apprehension on my part knowing there was little chance I would obtain another mug. I always admired teaKEY's hand-painted version of Crazy Al's ape mug by Tiki Farm and was waiting for that certain yet to be created mug to add that extra flair! At the end of 2007, that mug arrived! Of course, The Goof! Squid's adaption for the farm was perfect! Simple lines with that great manic feel! When Holden released the black and red A/P Goof, I had second thoughts. As nice as the limted painted Goof was (it is cool!), it just fell flat in my eyes. It lacked what the Goof always was and still is, a cartoon-like character of polynesian pop! So, after getting the nerve to forge ahead, I began. First, which paints? I decided on perm-enamel for it's fast air-dry quality. After slightly scuffing the intended areas, a stainblocking waterbased primer was applied. From there it was 3 coats of light paint allowing time in between to adhere. Finally, I sealed the paint using a clear gloss glaze. The color choice was easy and simple, but effective! White w/black. I had fanciful ideas of adding more to the headdress of the mug, including painting the entire chef's noggin. I resisted. Painting out one of his eyes was also considered, but in the end the headdress decoration and teeth were the focal point. Speaking of his chompers, I used a special paint. While the paint was still wet, I lightly impressed the blunt end of a matchstick to create small imperfections of lines and cracks into the teeth. It gave the appearance of a weatherbeaten Goof! (How do you think you would fair perched on a few rooftops for several years?). I am fairly pleased with the results! Hell, my teenage son thought it was killer and that is good enough for me! Let me know what you think! sandz [ Edited by: blacksandz 2008-02-08 17:38 ] [ Edited by: blacksandz 2008-02-20 14:13 ] |

Thanks Tipsy! I appreciate your comments! I really set out to paint The Goof more extravagant and similar to the Christian's Hut original. However, as most already know (1) Goof mug per customer and since this was my first-time attempt cold painting a mug, I had to stick to the phrase "Keep it simple, stupid"! Now, if I had some extra Goof mugs laying around like Holden does (just kiddin') , a full blown Goof would be attempted! By the way, nice Christian's Hut style mug! Painting The Goof was fun and fairly easy and looks pretty cool sitting next to my vintage Bali Hai! Mahalo! |

Blacksandz, great job. 199 brown Goof mugs, 20 limited edition black Goof mugs and 1 brown with white headdress hand painted Goof. I knew from the title that I was going to like the post before I opened it up to read. I think you will enjoy that mug more than ever before. It will be the one that your eyes get drawn to among the rest of your collection. I like how the brown collects around the raised sections and so the white painted parts are outlined with the darkest browns. Like a sign shop's approach. I think you did the right amount of color and it was your first. I am interested now what your second Goof could have became. The Holden mug is equally great. The red came out awesome. Tiki Farm's Myspace has a great Goof picture. Anyone have addition info on the Goof. The Book of Tiki talks about it but that T.F. pic adds to the story. Painted tiki mugs, what would the Hothead mug be without its red painted flames? Tipsy, I don't think the metal rings would have turned out. Unless they were still shaped like the mug has them and they were white. |

Thanks teaKEY, for your great compliments! :D I really wanted to add to the headdress area of The Goof (similar to The Christian's Hut) and to paint out the eye. With only (1) Goof mug to work with, I had to narrow down my decision to keep it simple. The Goof does "POP" among it's surroundings, simply by it's white and black paint scheme! I think you might have to add one more Goof mug to that list! Your amazing collaboration w/your Dad! If nobody knows what I'm talking about, check out teaKEY's thread "On top of Bali Hai" and gaze upon what could end up as the "Ultimate Goof Mug" Mahaloz, |
