Collecting Polynesian art & artifacts - where to start?

I'm interested in adding some traditional Polynesian art and artifacts to my tiki bar, and realized I don't know much about them. Anyone have any suggestions on where to start learning - book suggestions, or websites, with info on authenticity and value. I don't want to get swindled, and I'd like to get a good representation as well of the various islands.

Also, I would love to add a large functional slit drum to the bar. Anyone know where I might source such a beast?

To start with here is a great thread on PNG pieces. There are a great many good books on the subject of Oceanic art but can be hard to find. Good luck in your hunt.

I noticed that you did not specify whether you were seeking only authentic older pieces. Artifacts sounds pricey to most folks so perhaps you should determine a budget and go from there. I agree that you should hit the books and then you will know more about the arts and get a better "wish list" to work on. There are many other options for obtaining decor from more modern artists working in the traditional styles. As for getting swindled, no-one can know the value for everything and values change up and down regularly so if you find something you REALLY like, only pay what YOU feel it is worth. Thanks guys. I'm willing to pay a few hundred for a nice piece, maybe more depending on the size and level of detail.

I would consider newer pieces as well, although older work would be nice to have.
