Dr. Zarkov’s Tiki Lounge Playlist: April 5, 2017

On this Wednesday’s Dr. Zarkov’s Tiki Lounge radio show we will once again engage in an exploration of pop and exotica music in all of its comely complexion.

  1. “Poinciana,” was composed by Nat Simon and Bernie Bernier for the 1952 movie Dreamboat, and was recorded in 1953 by the alto sax master Benny Carter and is drawn with swizzle sticks from his fond look back: The Music Master.

  2. “Nature Boy,” the classic composition by the original Hippy Eden Ahbez was recorded in the late 1940s by the Gypsy Guitarist Django Reinhardt and comes from his righteous retrospective: Only the Best, featuring Stephane Grappelli on Violin, Eugene Vees on Acoustic Rhythm Guitar, Emmanuel Sodieux on Bass and Andre Jourdan on Drums.

  3. “Tabu,” the 1934 song by the Cuban composer Margarita Lecuona, is derived from the 1953 ambitious album: Moonlight in Vermont With the Johnny Smith Quintet, including Mr. Smith on Electric Guitar, Stan Getz on Tenor Sax, Sanford Gold on Piano, Eddie Safranski on Bass and Don Lamond on Drums.

  4. “Samois Swing” written by Dudley Hill, comes from the scintillacious CD: Swing 48 from the Tacoma, Washington, band Pearl Django, who include Mr. Hill, Neil Andersson and Greg Ruby on Acoustic Guitars and Michael Gray on Violin.

  5. “Crystal Silence,” inked by Chick Corea was performed by Martin Taylor on Guitar and David Grisman on Mandolin on their dualistic disc: Tone Poems II.

  6. 1717:53-1721:14 – “Far Outside Place” was composed, arranged and conducted by John Williams for the 1960-62 television series Checkmate, and who later went on to compose the theme music for Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies. This comes from the bulging box set: Jazz on Film…Crime Jazz! [CD 4] (3:21) Moochinabout, 2014. TRACK 4

  7. “Train D'enfer” was composed and performed by the sterling guitar player Stephane Wrembel on his superb CD: Origins, with Koran Hasanagic on Rhythm Guitar, Dave Seranza on Bass and Nick Anderson on Drums.

  8. “The Golden Glow” comes from the 1967 Benny Golson locateable LP: Tune In, Turn On – To the Hippest Commercials of the Sixties, featuring conductor and arranger Mr. Golson on Tenor Sax.

  9. The theme from the 1966 Movie "Our Man Flint" was composed by Jerry Goldsmith and performed by Elliott Fisher on his 1965 loud LP: Bang Bang Bang.

  10. “The Merry Men” by Don Richardson comes from the copacetic compilation: Soho Blondes & Peeping Toms! Saucy Vocals From the ‘50s and ‘60s.

  11. “Wives and Lovers” was composed in 1963 by Burt Bacharach and Hal David as a promotional tie-in for the movie of the same name, but did not appear in the film. This version comes from the 1965 reticulated recording: Calypso Blues by The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Sextet, with Mr. Clarke on Drums, the arranger Mr. Boland on Piano, Sahib Shihab on Flute, Fats Sadi on Vibes and Jimmy Woode Jr. on Bass.

  12. The composition “X Cert” came from Johnny Hawksworth and refers to the British Film Board certificate for films deemed suitable only for adults, and is found on the odd anthology: Music for Gracious Living 2.

  13. “Sabotagia (I Say Sabotage)” was performed by Eliot Easton’s Tiki Gods on their aquatic album: Easton Island, featuring the guitarist for the band The Cars along with Debbie Shair on Vocal, Todd Jaeger on Synthesizer, Probyn Gregory on Trumpet, Paul Meterns on Sax, and Darian Sahanaja on Vibes.

  14. “Crosstown Canyon” came from the Finnish surf rock band Laika and the Cosmonauts -- who are Mikko Lanikinen on Electric Guitar, Matti Pitsinki on Organ & Guitar, Tom Nyman on Bass and Janne Haavisto on Drums. and is found on from their completists’ collection: Cosmopolis.

  15. “Havana Moon” by the European band De-Phazz from their 2003 superlatitious CD: Godsdog

  16. The Joe Jackson rock hit “Steppin' Out” was warbled by Kurt Elling on his incomparable compact disc: The Gate, produced by Don Was, including Laurence Hobgood on Piano, Bob Mintzer on Tenor Sax, John McLean on Electric Guitar, John Patitucci on Bass, Kobie Watkins on Drums and Lenny Castro on Percussion.
