Ron Carioca Rum where did it go?

Pages: 1 5 replies

What happened to Carioca Rum? It seems as if it was somewhat popular till perhaps the 70’s. Then it disappeared in the 80’s? I bought this menu from:

https://www.tikiclassics.com/product/reproduction-aku-aku-menu-with-recipes-free-shipping

Many of the recipes call for Ron Carioca rum, example:

AKU AKU Zombie:

•1 oz Lime juice

•1 oz Grapefruit juice

•1 oz Syrup

• ¼ oz Pineapple juice

• 1 oz 151( not specified)

• 1 oz DARK CARIOCA

• 1 oz Dark Jamaican

• 1 dash falernum

• 1 dash Grenadine

• 1 Dash Angostura

• 1 Dash Pernod

Imported by AMERICAN SPIRITS, INC who sold out to Schenley Import Corporation who sold out to Guinness, who sold out to Diageo. It would seem that Carioca Rum just disappeared in the USA. You can still get Carioca Rum in Canada imported by Diageo Canada but from what I can see is not the same product.

Carioca Rum was produced by : COMPAÑIA RON CARIOCA DISTILLERIA INC. / San Juan, P. R. Dose anyone know what happened Ron Carioca Inc,(did they go out of business or did someone buy them out?) and where their distillery was located? Thank You.

Interesting.....

This is very very close to AKU AKU ZOMBIE recipe discovered by The Bum...but the "Zombie Mix" is replaced by dashes (minus the curacao).

Best as I can tell, the brand was last made by Cruzan, but is likely discontinued.

Thank you, makes sense as Schenley owned Cruzan. I wonder when thery moved production from Puerto Rico to the Vigin Islands?

Heavy bodied 90 proof PR rum? Wow, I wonder what's the closest thing available today.
