Are there still "hurricane parties" in Florida?

When I was a little kid living in Tampa and Sarasota, there were hurricane parties whenever one came stomping up from the Gulf, i.e., neighbors would gather in one house, batten down the hatches, fire up the kerosene lanterns and battery radios and try to make the best of it. Power and water would almost invariably be cut off at some point during the storm.

"Small" hurricanes were kind of fun. "Big" ones -- like the one you're apparently having now -- were nothing to screw around with. Best of luck.
