Oscar Wilde is one of the wittiest human beings that ever lived. The problem with quoting him is that there are so many great ones to choose from (several years worth if you limit it to one a day). Here's a sampling: Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much. America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between. Arguments are to be avoided; they are always vulgar and often convincing. I am not young enough to know everything. I think that God in creating Man somewhat overestimated his ability. One can survive everything, nowadays, except death, and live down everything except a good reputation. Work is the curse of the drinking classes. Scandal is gossip made tedious by morality. To get back my youth I would do anything in the world, except take exercise, get up early, or be respectable. Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative. Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about. |
