Well, just thought I'd chime in here since this hasn't been locked yet.

I'm Orthodox Christian and I agree with those here who are attraced to the polynesian pop culture side of collecting and decorating tiki. I don't worship any of my tikis. I also don't think anyone from my church would think I did if they came over.

However, Orthodox churches are heavily decorated with icons and symbolic art. Many religions scoff at that and say it is wrong. However, we see it just like a photograph of your family. Do you give the photo love or rather does it remind you of that person? We keep icons in our homes too. Although we don't mistreat icons and we have them blessed, we see them as reminders, for prayers, lessons, and daily living.

TWT- I think it is your use of words like "alter" and "shrine" that may make your friend feel uneasy. It certainly places more importance on objects than "decor" or even "knick-knacks" (which is what my tikis are) Your words make me feel uneasy and certainly make it sound as though you do worship the tikis. Maybe if this is a good friend you should chose your words more carefully, then he may be more accepting.
