Ka Maka, I must report the sad news that the Tonga Room is closed for the duration of the hotel workers' strike.

Was in San Fran on business last week and discovered this awful fact when I ran to the Fairmont (where the Tonga is located) with a pounding heart and tiki-hungry eyes. Strikers marching up and down in front of the Fairmont. Grim security guys standing in front of hotel. Hotel is open, but Tonga is shut down. Dohhhh! Nothing in life is fair! Nothing!

Went to the Bamboo Hut (please see in critiki.com). Wonderful tiki interior, big giant tiki mask on wall with red-lit eyes and mouth, really first rate, but somewhat ruined by pounding 80's top 40 "music." Lots of people, really a jumping place. The scorpian drink was perfectly awful, the Mai Tai one of the best I've ever had.

Bamboo Hut is within easy walking distance of City Lights Bookstore and The Condor (both are places of extreme historical significance). Lots of good restaurants also within easy walking distance.
