Some people carve foam (similar to styrofoam)which you can get at home depot. I haven't tried this yet (its on the list) but it might be an easy way and cheap way to get started & practice and you would get results quickly too. I've seen some painted foam tikis that I would SWEAR were wood until somebody picks them up.
