They seem to be the Hawaiian Islands' version of fairies or gnomes. Cartoon images and dolls depict them as cute and childlike, but in the eyewitness accounts, they are not typically described that way. Put those together with the nightmarchers (the nocturnal processions of ghostly royalty and their courts) and that's a lot of interesting stuff going on (supposedly) in Hawaii.
