Aloha, all! Well, I comiserate with your situation, and I've found that what works for me is to use a little imagination and creativity...the shadow box I would simply alter...maybe remove the African masks and glue some small tiki objects on it, or paint it or carve it, whatever, and when people come over who gave me this crap I just say that their gift inspired me so that I just had to run with it....Hope this perspective helps!
