That's a pretty rare one, very much like the black one in Tiki Quest p.19 upper right corner. Maybe the used it at the Islander on La Cienega, their mugs seemed to have had no markings, and this Tiki design was used for their bowls (BOT p.162/163) Oh yes, that is a very excellent find. Spurlin Ceramics, made mugs for a lot of the early So Cal spots (Islander, Tahitian, and others). Spurlin was known for some interesting glazes, this glaze one is the same that was used for the other Islander mug I have(check that same menu in BOT). Bob at OA helped identify another mug I have from Spurlin, made by Stella Bodey. They have a few in their case of ultimate rarities. Congrats, that is one very uncommon Tiki mug. midnite |
