You reminded me of what I liked most about the late '70's & 80's music...a lot of bands were bypassing the corporate music system and releasing their music on independent labels like Bomp, Slash, Stiff, etc. and the 7" 45 RPM single made a resurgence in a big way not seen since the '50's. A few of my fave singles (some of which I still have):

Adam & the Ants - Whip in My Valise
Madness -Night Boat To Cairo
the Specials - Nite Klub
the Weirdos-Destroy All Music (we just can't use it)
