The signature clearly read "Leeteg of Tahiti, copy made in Japan", which was described in the auction listing. Although it is a copy, it is a much better reproduction than many of the the knock-offs I have seen -- just as Midnite Tiki said. Also, it is labeled as being from the Davis Gallery which makes it about as close to authentic as I can afford. Also, this exact painting is in the Barney Davis book. Overall, I have to say I am really pleased with it and would recommend buying one of these repros -- if they ever come up at auction -- if you can't afford to fork over thousands for a geniune Leeteg velvet (which I can't).
