I would not use glue to hold rope/knots. Instead I use a 50/50 mix of zinsser bulls eye shellac, half amber half clear shellac. The knot will not come out once you do this so make sure you like your configuration before you paint. This method will help hold rope together, plus it gives the rope an old amber look. I also use this mixture on my bamboo/ratan stuff for that old look, And you get the added bouns of sealing your bamboo/ratan.
