Excellent stuff so far Tama. Your process looks similar to carving wood, you just remove anything that Ain't tiki. The tools are different but you have a pathway from raw to finished piece and along the path are the various tools and implements some of which you must engineer yourself. (I love the sideways drill press!) You must be a tool person and I'm sure you are lways looking for new and different ways to remove unwanted stone. My feeling is that if it will remove wood, It's Fair game and should be used. all these purists like to use old metal, manual tools, but IF they were purists, they would be using Stone tools and sand for smoothing.Hahahahaha This is already turning into a super interesting lesson.
