One of NZs truly great jade-carvers, Donn Salt, once told me how there were NO diamond tools or specific stone carving gear when he first started (1960-70's). He told me about the grinding wheel/unit he invented that used a car gear-box to adjust speed!!! He went into great (semi-slurry) detail as to how it worked (but in my own slurry state, didnt retain much!!), somehow it was still hooked up to the clutch, which was depressed by foot whilst gears/speed was changed!!! Hows THAT for a 'tool-guy'? We got it easy nowdays... :)
