Chan's Dragon Inn in New Jersey is a great place, a bit of a trip, but well worth it; the best sweet and sour pork and chicken this side of 1960. and it's got a really funky vibe; think Sopranos meet Trader Vics.

i can't recommend these first hand but there are other posts about places in staten island and long island too.
