A 1980's era United Airlines First Class menu I recently uncovered among my past flight souvenirs, features both Trader Vic's Mai Tais and Trader Vic's Menehune Juice...and according to that, the only difference is White Rum in the Menehune and Dark Rum in the Mai Tai.

There are also these from Trader Vic's own web site that I captured just before they shut down the recipe page a couple of months ago:

The Famous MAI TAI
4 oz. Trader Vic's Mai Tai Mix
2 oz. fine dark rum
juice of 1 fresh lime
Fill a double old fashioned glass with cubed ice and add the ingredients above. Stir well and garnish with fresh mint sprig, pineapple spear, cherry and slice of lime. Substitute 2 oz. of bourbon for the rum, and you've made a HONI HONI.

Menehune Juice
4 oz. Trader Vic's Mai Tai Mix
2 oz. of fine light rum
juice of one lime
Fill a mai tai (double old-fashioned) glass with shaved ice. Add mix and rum, and shake. Decorate with fresh mint, and fresh lime if you wish. (a Menehune is a Hawaiian "leprechaun")

...and the only difference I see there besides the dark/light rums...is cubed ice vs. crushed...and some garnish differences.

But I'm far from an expert in such matters. I usually don't make 'em. I just drink 'em!
