And there is such a thing as authenticity to a period and a style. There is authenticity of ancient Polynesian art, and there is the authenticity of the Polynesian Pop period from the 30s to the 70s, and its heyday of Tiki Style in the 50s and 60s.

This is a very good point.

I think the answer to my question is really that the Disney tikis were around in the Poly Pop period of the '50s and '60s and are therefore part of the lore. Party City wasn't and isn't. That's fine if you are clear that you're limiting your definition of tiki thus. What works for one does not work for all.

My four year old grandson loves the Party City crap and I have a ton of it (mostly purchased before I came here and was enlightened), so who am I to deny him that. He's going to grow up regarding tikis with the same wistful nostalgia that I do, only his "retro" will be the Party City tiki guy. I wonder if there will be a revival in 2050 of the tiki craze of the early 21st century :)

I've always been puzzled as to why the Disney tikis bear little or no resemblance to any of the classic tiki art, and that certainly clears that up for me.
