Hey Kate - check out rockler for TransTint dye, it might work better for you than stain. They come in some pretty crazy colors. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?Offerings_ID=11448&TabSelect=Details
My rockler said if you bring in sample wood, they can try out some stuff for you, don't know if it applies to the dyes, but it's worth a try.
