Tiki peeps, you may like this, please come by La Luz if you are not doing anyhing tonight! MEXICAN PULP ART book release party and art show Opening reception: Friday, June 8, 7 pm La Luz De Jesus Gallery The lurid cover art of Mexican pulp novels is a pop culture revelation. Never before seen in an English or even Spanish-language collection are the often surreal and psychedelic images of extraterrestrials, robots, dinosaurs, dastardly killers, Zorro, Santo, and many other icons from stories involving suspense, mystery, romance and the supernatural. MEXICAN PULP ART features some of the most striking paintings of this sensational art form of the ’60s and ’70s, collected by Sister Fun’s Bobbette Axelrod and American Visionary Art Museum’s Sideshow’s Ted Frankel. The introduction by researcher Maria Cristina Tavera contextualizes these artifacts unearthed from a defunct publishing company and its forgotten but inspired work-for-hire artists. An exhibit of Mexican pulp art will accompany the book release, featuring work pieces from the Applegate Gallery (Santa Monica), Bobette Axelrod and Ted Frankel’s collections, offering a rare opportunity to see and purchase original pieces from this recently discovered art form. La Luz De Jesus is located in the Soap Plant/WACKO building, in East Hollywood at 4633 Hollywood Blvd, 90027. Gallery hours are Monday – Wednesday: 11am – 7pm, Thursday – Saturday: 11am – 9pm and Sunday 12-6pm. |
