I'm curious if the room you stayed in had a safe? If it didn't, under California law the hotel may be liable for your entire loss, regardless of them posting a "Hotel is not responsible for stolen items" sign. If would be great if just once the police would bust some crack addict and all of the stolen equipment would be found safe and sound. I've been the victim of theft more than once and it just plain sucks and pisses you off. Hang in there.
