The story of how On The Road was written ( the original scroll that is ) EJack on benzedrine high writing the book in 3 weeks on a roll of teletype paper Eis mostly mythic in nature . The truth is that Jack collected material for OTR in his journals when traveling in the USA and Mexico from 1947 E1950 . He actually began writing the book in 1948 ( not titled On The Road at this time ) before going on the road with Cassady . Once on the road itself he filled his journals and pocket notebooks with millions of words about his experiences and thoughts and all the images of the great America he saw . Much of the book was culled from these journals and notebooks , and also letters . They were at his side during his three week burst Ehe three week explosion was influenced mainly by two things : his friendly competition with fellow Beat novelist John Clellon Holmes ( Go published in 1952 ) ; and Neal Cassady’s long , unbroken , uninterrupted first-person EJoan Anderson Eletter which Jack thought Eranked among the best things ever written in America E.

The scroll is not one , long roll of teletype paper . It is thin , long sheets of drawing paper which were taped together . He wanted to type fast without stopping .

The scroll , contrary to myth , was for the most part conventionally punctuated .

The scroll was written in the spring of 1951 , but it would be 6 years before OTR itself would be published . Revisions were made by Jack almost as soon as the scroll was finished , and many , many more were to be made along the way by Jack himself and editors at Viking Books .

The incredible 21 day burst of artistic energy that produced the scroll was fueled by COFFEE , and not benzedrine .

The heavily edited and re-written finished product is quite a different animal fom the original scroll , obviously . You might be interested in knowing that ON THE ROAD EThe Original Scroll , was published in August by Viking . If you’ve read the original OTR , I would highly recommend picking up EThe Scroll E.
