A public figure is fair game for editorial cartoons and the like. If you were to make a Tiki mug with the distinct face of Elvis Presley on it, I believe the owners of his estate might have something to say about it, since they still make $$$ on his image. On the other hand, the owners of the Buddy Holly estate probably would never know about it. Also, there is something called "fair use" of copyrighted images, but I believe that applies to anything promoting or critiquing the copyrighted item in question. Then there is MAD Magazine, hmmm.
