Thanks for the feedback - the general consensus seems to be to keep it pretty simple, which I'm going to do. In fact some of the areas I've carved and cleaned up will probably be taken back to the "rough rock" finish. There's maybe one more session to go on the big piece, and I've more or less finished the manaia pendant after keeping him in the time-out box for a while:
