So Cal friends and surf music fans ‹

This is way-last-minute, I know, but it¹s about a way-cool opportunity
that
you might not want to miss...

My ol¹ pal TEISCO DEL REY ‹ Austin TX¹s premiere surf rocker ‹ is
coming to
So Cal to play at Deke Dickerson¹s annual ³Guitar Geek² festival in
Anaheim
this coming Saturday, January 19 (headlined this year by the legendary
Collins Kids of Œ50s rockabilly fame). And I¹m stoked because I get
to be
part of the all-star band backing him for this.

*** And NOW I¹M ALL THE MORE STOKED because we have JUST ADDED a
second
engagement for SUNDAY NIGHT (the 20th) at the PURPLE ORCHID TIKI BAR in
EL
SEGUNDO. (The Glasgow Tiki Shakers are also on the bill here...) ***

Details about both gigs are below, in a reprint of Teisco¹s own blurb
about
these events. I¹ll just add that Teisco is one of my favorite people
‹ he¹s
quite a colorful and quirky character, to put it mildly! It¹s sure to
be a
great show at whichever event you might attend. Please read the blurb

you¹ll get the picture...

TEISCO DEL REY
FIRST-EVER SOCAL APPEARANCES! TWO SHOWS ONLY!!
THIS WEEK!!
DON¹T MISS OUT!!!
Sat, Jan. 19, Guitar Geek Festival -- Jolly Roger Hotel ballroom,
Anaheim
Sun, Jan. 20, the Purple Orchid in El Segundo
As roots-rock guru Deke Dickerson writes: "Many remember Teisco Del Rey
as
the columnist for Guitar Player magazine for many years. Others
remember him
from his astounding instrumental albums, where he tackled everything
from
surf to soul, channeling the spirit of Duane Eddy. Yet others will
remember
him as the only man in the last 3 decades to seriously play the
'Guitorgan.'
All this and more will be revealed in Teisco Del Rey's first-ever
Southern
California live appearance! Not to be missed."
It's true! Austin, Texas'
Teisco Del Rey is finally playing the birthplace of surf music -- with,
as
he says, "Not just an all-star band, not a dream team, but the dream
team of
instrumental surf."
On bass: Dick Dale alumnus and member of the Torquays,
STEVE SOEST.
On drums: from the Halibuts and Los Straitjackets, PETE
CURRY.
And on guitar: instro-surf pioneer and member of the Belairs, PAUL
³MR. MOTO² JOHNSON.
TEISCO and his bad self plays lead guitar and Guitorgan,
handsomely decked out in fine men's apparel.
Details:
Teisco & Co.'s Geek Fest set is scheduled for 9:30 (640 W.
Katella, at Harbor) -- just before rockabilly legends the Collins Kids
close
the day-long party. It's a quickie (only 35 minutes), so don't be late.
Check out the whole amazing lineup at
http://www.guitargeekfestival.com/
.
At the Purple Orchid, El Segundo's swinging new surf spot (right near
LAX:
211 Richmond; 310/322-5829; [email protected]), doors open
at
7:30 and the Glasgow Tiki Shakers promise to get things shaking. Then
Teisco
plays 'til 10 or 10:30 or who knows? -- as long as they'll let him! A
mere
$5.
"Lashing, surfing-in-a-hurricane intensity, rendered with passion and
style." -- Guitar Player magazine
"If John Waters had gotten a guitar
instead of camera for his 12th birthday, this is what he'd sound like."

Playboy
"He's perfected the mix of Texas-blues-meets-'60s surf." -- Austin
Chronicle
"Part surf, part greasy R&B, part 1960s punk, part B-movie hot-rod
anthems -- and all trashy fun. This Austin visionary surrounds himself
with
some of the best roots music players in town and proceeds to tear his
way
through a primer of two-fisted instrumentals." -- Rhapsody
"You sound like
the Ventures on acid!" -- an actual fan at a recent gig
