Be sure to check the floor where you are going to put the bar and make sure its level. It will make life a lot easier in the long run. Slab floors (esp. basements) are notoriously unlevel. If it is really bad, Take a 2x6 prop it up to level, then put a 2x4 flat on the ground and draw a line on the 2x6. If you cut that line, everything else you build off it will be level.

For a bar top I wouldn't go any less than 3/4 cabinet grade plywood. it has a nice finish and won't warp.

Use a two part epoxy to get a thick finish like restaurants and bars have (they sell it at the home depot). You just pour it on and it levels itself out. You can put pictures, coins, or just about anything you want in the finish.

You can also do a sheet metal top. It will wear nice after use.
