I'm 27 and have long been into tiki, as well as mid-century modernism, surf music and other good stuff. I'm not sure why my generation has such terrible taste. Maybe it's our crappy visual landscape... it seems like the last vestiges of the modern era disappeared in the 70's.

Luckily tiki people are really welcoming (especially in the northeast!) But you still get your mai tai nazis, exotica snobs, etc. who would rather see the scene die with them than welcome someone who "doesn't quite get it."

I can relate to both of those statements, the first one, because in my urban archeology career, things have changed to the worse so much, and the second, because I am sometimes being mistaken as a Tiki Nazi. Yet that kind of person seems more prevalent in the Exotica scene.

One must realize though that it takes a lot of patience and self control to be open to the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, when one has been into something for ten years or longer. Luckily, here on Tiki Central folks are mostly easygoing and welcoming, just like Americans in general are less judgmental and open than the snobbish European subculture elitists.
