There is a bone carver in New Zealand (Norm Clark) who, I understand, uses a method in which the bone is "smoked" with fish and that stain doesn't wash out. I don't know any details about his method but perhaps someone reading this thread will know. I've also heard of others who use smoking with incense but I don't know anything at all about that method.
