I'd go to a professional furniture restorer for advice on removing the paint from wood, city cleaners aren't to concerned about leaving the surface over clean when they remove paint.

I'll second this suggestion, and check with your local Art Restorer, too; they can be found through Art Museums or Galleries that specialize in older works.
