About 25 years ago, I found a chess game, in a fruit market in "Martinique" F.W.I.!! It was made of ebony and tropical red wood, composed of 32 little marvels: the guy who sold me this chess game pretented it came from a sailor coming from the Pacific (which after all, was not that far, right after the Panama Canal!!!) As I was mad about chess and I also had a real passion fort African Art and Tribal Art. But I knew zip about Polynesia!!
I bought it. Long after around year 2000, I happened to live in Tahiti for a couple of years and soon realized that it was not tahitian at all!!!
But it's quite nice anyway just have a look at them!
(and check my blog : http://www.tahitiblues.blogspot.com / You'll find hundreds of tatoo patterns, sketches, waterpainting and photos about Marquesan ancestral sculpture,,, and many stories (sorry, most of themare in french but you can pass them through Babel !!)
