For starters This type Sanding mop/flap is the Best one and the Only one to use on carvings. All the individual"fingers" get into all the little out of the way places you would normally sand by hand OR Ignore.. It is important to start with the heavy grits and work up to the finer ones as the high grits will just polish the stuff you are trying to remove as well as ruin the fine paper. You can get these all mounted on a 1/4" Shank in 4 grits and 3 different sizes.

Use these on a power drill , flex shaft or die grinder with speed control and I'm sure you will have a Different feeling when it comes time to sand.
