If I remember correctly, Donn Beach said he started making and serving rum drinks because rum was readily available after prohibition and it was cheap. That appears to be why he was so obsessed with mixing rum cocktails versus any other booze. Come to think of it, there are not many true tiki drinks that use anything other than rum. There is some gin in a Singapore Sling, but that's all I can think of right now.
