Next door to the Inland Empire, and a lifestyle away is California's High Desert (Yucca Valley, etc.). Very laid back, somewhat of a rural "Mayberry" scene in parts. Very peaceful, and EXTREMELY affordable. Then there's the Coachella Valley, positioned for an economic boom, but not overgrown and obnoxious (yet). Lots of "affordable" older homes, many that serve as seasonal vacation homes. Even more amazing is the abundance of new homes under $120,000. Try the town of Coachella, as well as Bermuda Dunes, Cathedral City, and (yes) even Palm Springs. I now live in a place that sold for 1/2 the price of my SF home, and has 1800 more square feet, in an incredible neighborhood!
