There is also the oft-overlooked Bamboo Hut in North Beach. It's super easy to get there on Muni (a 30 or 15 will take you right there), it's in the heart of a fun neighborhood (North Beach), near City Lights Bookstore, and is usually open in the afternoons. I've seen a few bands playing there on a Sunday afternoon as well. Just don't go anywhere near it on a weekend night.
