I moved to Hawaii in 1981 and am now living here in Kailua, Oahu. Our house was $140,000 when we bought it in 1986 and is now worth near $700,000. We got in "under the wire" before prices went sky high. Most jobs are low paying (you'll need two) and rents are high. A house rental is usually between $2,300 per month to $27.000.
On a positive note:

  1. Nobody wears a lot of clothes. In fact, there are tanned, well-toned, young and single naked women everywhere.
  2. Most people carve tikis for a living, play uke all day in a hammock with a Mai Tai nearby, and live in free in vacant tourist rental houses on the beach.
  3. Beer flows from the numerous waterfalls. And it's ice cold.
  4. The surf is always great and uncrowded. Newcomers always get the first pick of waves.
  5. The locals love "haoles" and will give you tons of free stuff as well as introduce you to their really hot sisters and cousins.
  6. Free ice cream.
  7. I talk to my monstera plants and they think I'm crazy too.
