New (Feb '10) Hawai'i Magazine has feature story on Koloa Rum, made on Kaua'i. It's not on the http://www.hawaiimagazine.com website yet, but a few highlights:

  • Owner has stored up 3 years-worth of Kaua'i-grown sugar, because the island's last sugar plantation closed in October of this year.

  • Using a 1947 Kentucky still once used to make Jack Daniels.

  • Production began in October 2009, with white, gold and dark bottlings. (Company website also lists a spiced rum, but that wasn't mentioned in the story.)

  • Only available at the moment on Kaua'i at the company's tasting room. Several Kaua'i bars have it, including the Beach House Restaurant, Duke's Canoe Club, and at the Marriott and Hilton.

Once again, information a few days too late for me. As mentioned in the okolehao thread, my brother was just on a Hawaiian cruise and could've picked me some up had I known. D'oh!
