Hey bowana. Not sure if you found a solution for this :-

I actually have that all the time, inside my patterns, im ment to produce those lines at the same distance appart, and then run over from the other direction, if done correctly it leaves a net pattern. I can do it clean already, but im trying to learn this other style. Anyway if you hold the chisel OR the mallett hard you cant create the effect, both hands must be held loose so the chisel bounces twice, and leaves an indent.
Im just guessing the wood you use is real soft. Anyway after i block out, if i want it clean, you can push the chisels through by hand/ or hold it vertically and pull the chisel back with the grain. When you pull it off, It looks like its been hit with every grade of sand papaer. I usually only use flats or 2's or 3's to scrape.
