Another good program is Adobe Audition. Disadvantage is that it's not free. And if you do try it out, try the Audition 1.5: AA 2.0 was pretty much a reworking of the program with a new UI and lots more gadgets, whereas the 1.5 is very close to Audacity, but I find it slightly more user-friendly and it's fun to play around with.
And because of the facelift, AA 2.0 was a big resource-hog, and would produce "skips" on the transfer as the file was interrupted by the program itself.

Both Audacity and Audition have sets of echo-filters, which are fun to work with. A few albums I've transferred, I keep one original and rework a copy through with a touch of echo or with deeper bass, and with a slight feeling of guilt often like the outcome more than the original.
