I just realized this after posting something similar in "Beyond Tiki". Where did the inspiration for the Zombie cocktail come from?

I think this film released in 1932 (2 years prior to Don Beach creating the Zombie cocktail) is the key. Many film critics argue this film introduced the word Zombie and its concept of the "animated dead" into popular culture. Unlike George Romero's brain eating Zombies, these Zombies were based in Voodoo folklore which was brought to Haiti by African slaves.

Bela Lugosi, coming off the success of 1931's "Dracula", plays Murder Legendre, an evil voodoo master.
