I'd also recommend - if you're stopping by Monterey on the way - lunch at Hula's, especially their fish tacos.

For the Bay Area - if the Emeryville Trader Vic's is done with its remodel, that's a great place too.

As far as places to stay:
Deetjen's Big Sur Inn is a great hotel and the food there is phenomenal.

In San Luis Obispo, the Madonna Inn has various themed rooms, even some cave-like ones. We stayed in Daisy Mae, which was all rock walls, floors and ceiling. HIGHLY recommended. They also have a very swank pink-boothed restaurant/bar area.
