Originally my group was supposed to stay at the Hotel Hanga Roa, which is the largest hotel on the island. Our tour organizer was not able to strike a satisfactory deal with the hotel and eventuall abondoning it, splitting the group between the nearby Hotel Taha Tai and the newer, smaller Altiplanico. When I was there I noticed that the Hotel Hanga Roa is almost next door to the Taha Tai, and it was closed! The largest hotel on the island is closed for what is likely the biggest tourist event ever to come to that island, the Rapa Nui Eclipse. I was curious as to what was going on with that hotel, and this explains a lot.
