Truman Capote didn't think much of beat writing - so much of it was unedited stream of consciousness. He said, "That's not writing, that's typing." But I think Capote was sort of beat, despite himself. He had an uncanny knack for rooting out the sublime essence of life in the most mundane circumstances. That's what beat is to me. |
