Figure of Land-Otter-Man, used on the prow of a large war canoe pointing towards the safe direction. He rescues the souls of drowning people and turns them into land otters. Tlingit Culture, 1825-1875. From Chilkroot, Alaska. Cedar wood, abalone, human hair. See photo below from National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC:
