Skip Heller's Bossa Nova Au GoGo at Forbidden Island, 5/27 Exotica meets organ jazz, bossa nova, and sixties pop in Skip Heller's new Bossa Nova Au GoGo. Skip Heller emerged arrived in Calformia in the early 1990's, as a protege of the great Les Baxter. He worked closely on high-level exotica not only with Les, but also Yma Sumac, Robert Drasnin, Plas Johnson, DJ (X) Bonebrake, and many others. In addition, he did cartoon music for the Flintstones and Dexter's Laboratory. And from 2000-2007, he led one of the most critically acclaimed organ jazz combos of the decade. He's back to it, with a new bossa nova group, featuring vocalist Claire Costa, who was starred recently in the circus/burlesque show Cirlesque, playing ukelele and singing in French. Add Romeo Void/Pearl Harbor and the Explosions drummer John Hanes and Bay Area Hammond B-3 organ genius Brian Ho, and you've got one very luxuriant jet set combo. At the core of the group is Heller's want to pay tribute to the legendary records Astrud Gilberto with Brazil's genius jazz organist Walter Wanderley. Using this as a jump off point, the group also includes fifties French pop, Mexican boleros, Italian ya ya, and more. This is the quartet's Bay Area debut, and it will shake and stir you. |
