This short story appeared in the San Diego paper today:

"Taste of the tropics

Before the pots were cool from the last supper at Fio's, people were buzzing about David and Lesley Cohn's plans for an upscale tiki-style bar and bistro in the space on Fifth Avenue.

Hans Richter, president of the Corte Madera-based Trader Vic's, confirmed by telephone that he and David Cohn discussed opening up a San Diego franchise of the tropical Asian restaurant. But Richter said Cohn decided to whip up his own version of the concept that Victor Jules Bergeron created in the late 1930s, spawning such goodies as crab Rangoon and the mai tai.

The Cohns did not return repeated calls for comment. Whatever the new venture is, it will bring the number of Cohn restaurants in San Diego County to nine."

This must have been what a local carver was talking about at the Pacific Islander Festival. He told me he was trying to get a piece of the action doing decor at a new downtown Trader Vics. For some reason the phrase "upscale tiki-style" doesn't set well with me. Hope they don't blow it.
