I saw this article when it first came out & so far as I'm aware it's all factual. But I think it's akin to saying anything associate with Disney World isn't truly Floridian. What exactly would be truly Floridian other than something from the Seminoles or aboriginal peoples? And even THEY came from somewhere else at some point. Same with Hawaii to me.
Because something wasn't IN the Hawaiian Islands before 1778 doesn't mean it isn't really HAWAIIAN to me. Grass skirts didn't originate here, neither did pineapples or sugar, but grass skirts have been completely absorbed into the culture. I think most of us involved with "tiki culture" don't have a problem understanding a "created" element becoming part of a living culture. It's called change.
You can say Disney World isn't part of the "real" Florida, but if you took Disney away, would Florida be the same? No. Ditto for all these things mentioned about Hawaii.
