(kinda crappy photo edit, I'm at work and had to use an online program)
I have problems too with the flash washing out the color, here's a few things I do that help
- Get farther back and zoom in, the flash isn't as overpowering
- Turn the flash on but cover it up, sometime that fools the camera
- A flash diffuser helps, if you have a digital SLR with a seperate flash you could buy a diffuser. They are inexpensive, just a little white plastic cap that goes over the flash. I usually put a Kleenex over the flash with a rubber band. If you are using a pocket camera with an integrated flash, you might stick a piece of frosted Scotch tape over it to tone down the flash.
